It seems like these days parents have more things to worry about than ever before. Something that wasn’t a concern just a generation ago was screen time. It’s a two-fold problem now given that too much screen time can hinder development and increase your energy bill in the summer at the same time.Â
Electronics are a modern day convenience, but we don’t want our kids to become reliant on them for summer fun. There’s nothing greener than getting outdoors and enjoying the natural surroundings. Right in your yard there are tons of fun eco-friendly summer activities for kids of all ages. We’ve included a few of our favorite ideas for inspiration to get the fun started!
Set Up an Obstacle Course
An obstacle course is too fun for kids to resist, even if they aren’t the type that’s generally into sports. Obstacle courses are a challenge. It’s a fun test that’s more about technique than strength and speed. Encourage kids to practice the obstacles so they can figure out the technique that works best for them.Â
You don’t have to buy an expensive pre-made obstacle course. You can create your own using things like hula hoops, chalk, rope and other things you find around the house.Â
Chill Out With an At-Home Splash Pad
After running around the obstacle course you don’t have to go inside to cool off if you have your own backyard splash pad. Even adults don’t mind beating the heat in a kiddie pool or gliding down a slip ‘n slide. Add some super soakers and water balloons and you probably won’t be able to get kids to come back inside.Â
Start a Garden
Few things in life are as rewarding as watching a garden flourish. It’s also a relaxing hobby that can teach kids a number of lessons about science, the environment and responsibility. Each step in the process is a mini project from selecting the seeds and plants at a nursery to installing a garden box to tending to the veggies, flowers and fruit once they start growing.Â
Become an Amateur Entomologist
Every yard has one thing in common – bugs. An entomologist is a scientist that studies insects. All most kids need is a magnifying glass to become amateur entomologists. Nurture the new nature hobby by getting your kids an insect identification book or glass containers to collect bugs. The Entomological Society of America also has some helpful resources if you’re new to entomology.Â
If you also plant a garden it’s the perfect place to analyze insects in action! You can even introduce helpful insects like ladybugs that will keep plant-eating pests in check.Â
Build a Treehouse
Building a treehouse is a project that will keep your family busy for a while, but it can end up providing years of entertainment. The best part is you don’t have to actually build it in a tree. And there are treehouse kits you can buy online that come with all the parts. They range from simple, open-air structures to miniature dwellings that are like an ADU.
Hang a Rope Swing
A rope swing is the perfect example of how the simple things in life can be the most enjoyable. It’s virtually impossible not to have fun with a rope swing once it gets going. And there’s something so quintessentially Americana about a rope swing hanging from a tree. Even if no one is swinging it can be a nice addition to the yard and a fun afternoon project.Â
Play Kickball or Kick the Cans
Some games are meant to be played outside only, and any game that involves kicking belongs in that category. Classic backyard games like kickball and kick the cans keep kids entertained for hours. There isn’t much equipment needed and both can be set up quickly. Kick the cans only requires three players, but many more kids could get in on the game. Kickball is a little more organized and will require at least four players for each team. Invite some friends over and let the fun begin!
Test Your Outdoor Chef Skills
Your kids may not be interested in cooking in the kitchen, but if the meal moves outdoors they may just want to help out. Because grilling tends to be simple, it’s a great way to get kids cooking and learning about making meals. It’s a good introduction to cooking since everything is happening in one place using the same cooking method. Plus, there’s less of a mess to clean up compared to making a meal inside.Â
